our history

The history of cancersimplified.org is intertwined with the history of another non-profit... Fighting Chance.org. From its office in Sag Harbor, Fighting Chance serves as a free-of-charge counseling and resource center for cancer patients on the East End of Long Island.

In recent years, about 1,000 residents of the East End annually have been stricken with cancer and roughly 400 of them call Fighting Chance, many within 48 hours of diagnosis.

Most of these cancer patients – when they connect with Fighting Chance – are terrified, disoriented, and utterly insecure about where to turn for accurate information.

After a few counseling sessions with the oncology social workers at Fighting Chance, most patients emerge with a far better understanding of their disease and a new sense of empowerment. They also know that Fighting Chance will remain by their side, helping navigate the healthcare system every step of the way during their treatment.

Duncan N. Darrow established Fighting Chance in 2002 shortly after his mother died of lung cancer. For Duncan’s resume click here. From his years as a cancer patient advocate, Duncan learned that patients longed to have cancer explained in the simple language of the layman. That is the mission of cancersimplified.org.
