our doctors... thanks for reviewing the manuscript

When you try to simplify a scientific concept - to make it more understandable to layman - sometimes you lose something in translation. You "over-simplify," in other words, and what results can be misleading.

To avoid this issue, the final draft of the cancersimplified text was reviewed by five physicians. All had positive reaction although there were a handful of suggested revisions that were made; the group also concurred that the material would be very useful to cancer patients. Our thanks to these five physicians:

Martin Karpeh, Jr., MD. Currently head of the Department of Surgery at Beth Israel Hospital in New York, where he specializes in surgery involving gastro-intestinal cancers. Prior to coming to Beth Israel, Dr. Karpeh was in charge of The Cancer Center at Stonybrook University Hospital on Long Island. Since 2005 he has been on the board of directors of Fighting Chance.

Philip Schulman, MD. A distinguished oncologist, Dr. Schulman was selected by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Commack, NY to head up its satellite facility on Long Island which has over 20 physicians. Dr. Schulman also heads up the medical advisory board of Fighting Chance.

Peter Bach, MD. Dr. Bach is on staff of Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; his expertise in bio-statistics had made him one of the few physicians in oncology care who also are conversant with broader issues of medical system cost and healthcare policy.

Renu Hausen, MD. Dr. Hausen heads up North Fork Radiation Oncology, the primary radiation treatment center for cancer patients on the East End of Long Island. She is a director of Fighting Chance.

Tom Nash, MD. Early in his career, Dr. Nash oversaw all of the residents of New York Hospital and since then he has built a distinguished practice in internal medicine at his office in New York City. He also serves on the medical advisory board of Fighting Chance.
