cancersimplified.org was founded as a non-profit in 2008 by Duncan N. Darrow, who has been a cancer patient advocate since 2002. To see his resume click here.
Duncan's primary interest has been finding new ways to "empower" cancer patients so that they feel they are helping craft their own recovery plan. Along with empowerment comes a more positive attitude and, some say, a better chance of survival.
One tool patients have lacked, as Duncan Darrow sees it, is something that gives them the "Big Picture" about cancer. That includes the biology of the disease, medical progress in defeating it, treatment choices, insurance issues and the use of caregivers.
Thus was born the idea of cancersimplified, which has been a year in the making.
What you will find are 44 flip charts with a PowerPoint skeleton - that rely upon schedules, charts, color coding, lots of other graphics and plenty of metaphors. Not exactly a "new vocabulary" for layman to use in talking about cancer. But maybe it's a first step in that direction.
